Bachelor of Engineering
Overview
The aim of the Bachelor of Engineering degree is to produce professional engineers who possess the graduate attributes of the University of Wollongong in Dubai and the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes to further develop in their chosen careers; and who graduate with the proficiency to compete successfully anywhere in the world.
The salient features of the proposed programs* are as follows:
- The UOWD proposed Bachelor of Engineering are largely based on the strong internationally accredited programs offered by the University of Wollongong in Australia which are accredited by the institute of Engineers Australia and the Washington Accord.
- There are three majors within the degree, Computer, Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering. For all three majors, the program of study is common until the end of Autumn Session in Year 3.
- There will be two intakes during the year for the engineering program; one in autumn and one spring.
- The degree may be completed in a minimum of four years of full-time study and progression is by subject where subject pre- and co-requisites must be satisfied.
- All applicants for admission to engineering programs who satisfy the minimum admission requirements specified by the University are allowed to sit for challenge tests in Foundation Mathematics and Statistics, Foundation Physics and English Academic Writing; these subjects ensure that students have the necessary background to embark on first semester of engineering. Candidates who do not sit for the challenge tests or those who failed to achieve acceptable performance will be required to take the corresponding preparatory subjects.
- The structure of the Bachelor of Engineering includes the following components:
- General Education subjects: provide guidance toward the attainment of breadth outside the engineering area of specialization.
- Preparation for major: provides students with all the necessary tools to start their core engineering program; these tools include introductory subjects in mathematics, physics, computing and electrical engineering.
- Core Electrical Engineering: include all the common subjects between all the three majors.
- The depth represents the intensive study of one of the engineering areas and is provided through specialization in a major field. The depth in each of the area of specialization is achieved through subjects in a particular major, final year specialization subjects and a thesis project.
- All Bachelor of Engineering students must accumulate at least 12 weeks of approved professional experience, documented in the form of employment reports and preferably in the period between Years 3 and 4.
