Students who prefer an independent lifestyle should consider private living arrangements, if you:
- have a car or can make other transportation arrangements
- prefer not to share an apartment with other students
- can manage the landlord - tenant relationship, budgeting, cooking, and cleaning.
UOWD has contacts with some real estate companies and hotel apartments which provide private furnished/unfurnished accommodation available on a short-term basis suitable for students. All private rental arrangements are handled between the student and the rental agent. UOWD is not responsible for any aspect of private accommodation.
Private rental sometimes does not include furnishings, utilities, internet, or satellite TV service. It also does not include transportation to/from the campus or damage deposits. UAE landlords normally require that tenants pay the annual rental in advance before moving in, although in some cases they will accept payment in 2 or 3 instalments (by way of post-dated cheques).
Students who wish to live in private accommodation should travel to Dubai prior to the start of the semester to make the necessary arrangements. Please note that private accommodation is considerably more expensive than the Student Residences and is not always readily available.
The classified sections of the newspapers in Dubai provide a comprehensive listing of all types of accommodation from shared flats to furnished apartments and private villas. Rental prices are quoted in annual terms.
Due to the restrictions related to international student visa sponsorship, it may be very difficult for a non-GCC national student to bring their family to Dubai. However, should family members be permitted to accompany the student, or join the student at a later date, the approximate annual cost for family accommodation ranges between AED 60,000 to 200,000.
