The Student Services Department provides a range of on-going support services to ensure that the experience of new students is a positive and successful one. The following are of some of the services provided:

International Student Program

The International Student Program (ISP) involves activities that contribute to a student’s well-being and assimilation to Dubai and University life. In additional to the “O” Week activities and Welcome Week, the Student Services Department organizes excursions to places of interest in Dubai and the surrounding Emirates throughout the session.

Careers Development Services

The Careers Development Services provides students with career development in order to facilitate a successful transition from being a university student to a career-minded individual. The services include a comprehensive package of information and training to assist students throughout their enrolment at UOWD by qualified career advisors, seminars, drop-in information sessions, skills workshops, mock-interview practice, career fairs, on-line job postings, noticeboard job postings, information handouts, a career resource library, internships and paid work experience.   • Provide individual and group counselling on career related issues;
  • Provide job-skill training on campus;
  • Develop employer relations leading to internship opportunities for students;
  • Provide assistance to students seeking employment opportunities.

S.T.A.R. Leadership Program

S.T.A.R. is an acronym for Students Taking Active Roles and is an extra-curricular program designed to develop the leadership abilities of students to enhance their employability at the time they graduate. Many of the existing programs, activities, seminars and workshops are incorporated into the S.T.A.R. program.

S.T.A.R. offers students a range of interactive workshops, one-on-one training, developmental activities and projects, seminars, competitions and internships to choose from over the period of the program. Completion of certain activities is compulsory within the scope of the program; other activities are elective.

Students earn prizes by achieving certain targets throughout the program as well as a Certificate of Accomplishment at completion, but the true reward will be the students’ enhanced employability upon graduation.

Counselling Services

UOWD’s Student Counsellor provides the opportunity for students to discuss, in complete confidence and in a safe environment, those issues and concerns relating to personal development, relationship difficulties, family conflicts, coping with stress, grief, and bereavement as well as study and course difficulties.

The Student Counsellor can help students settle into Dubai, and assist with orientation to the local area, homesickness, study difficulties, academic concerns, budgeting, health, personal problems and family emergencies. She can also help introduce new students to other students.

Medical Centre

The UOWD Medical Centre is a primary health care facility which provides professional medical and health services for students. These services include health promotion and disease prevention, care during acute and chronic phases of illness, and outside referrals when appropriate.

The Medical Centre staff members recognize the basic human rights of all patients who seek treatment. Students will be treated with respect, consideration and confidentiality. A qualified registered nurse is on duty during normal office timings; a qualified doctor consults on campus two afternoons a week.

The Medical Centre plays an active role in educating the university community and promoting health on campus. Health programs include seminars on smoking, diabetes, personal hygiene, CPR training, drug abuse and obesity as well as other topics of interest to students.

Emphasis is placed on making UOWD a healthy and safe place to study and work.

Student Clubs & Associations

The University aims to create and maintain a community where students may pursue various activities in order to enrich their student lives. UOWD Student Clubs offer a fun way to meet people with similar interests. Students are able to establish their own clubs or join existing clubs. There are a wide range of social and cultural clubs established to suit the needs of most students. Students may join a club at any time of the year although club membership drives are generally held during the first week of classes each semester.

Alumni Services

The UOWD Alumni Association is an extension of the UOWD culture and community beyond the University. Upon graduation, students automatically become a member of the Alumni Association. This elite and exclusive organization puts students in touch with other UOWD graduates, helping to build a life long network. Membership encourages participation in numerous Alumni events offering continual professional development and social interaction.

Sport and Recreation

A range of sporting and recreational facilities are available for students at UOWD. Specialised coaches allow students to get the most out of the University’s sporting and recreational facilities.

UOWD has many sports teams that participate in both inter- and intra-university competitions. UOWD offers a broad-based competitive and instructional program for both men and women in the following sporting activities:

Transportation

Transportation in air-conditioned shuttle buses from points in Ajman, Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain to and from the University is available for students. Monthly charges are AED 600 for Ajman, AED 600 for Sharjah and AED 500 for Dubai, AED 900 for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain ..

UOWD also provides complimentary transportation between the Student Residences and the campus. On weeknights, a shuttle service operates between the Student Residences and a nearby shopping mall; on weekends, a circular service operates between the Student Residences and various points throughout Dubai. For students participating in UOWD’s sports teams, transportation is provided to and from most sporting facilities and events.

Public transportation is available to other destinations. It is safe, clean and inexpensive. Students may obtain a student discount upon showing their Student ID card. The cost is approximately AED 1.50 – 3.00 depending upon the length of the journey.
