Sunday, 30 January, 2011

January 26 was a day of celebration at UOWD: It was the Australia National Day and the India Republic Day and an apt celebration for an Australian university with a high number of Indian students.

UOWD Student Services Department kicked off the celebrations with a ceremony to open the brand new recreation centre extension at the University.

Professor Rob Whelan, President UOWD, cut the ribbon to the new student recreation area which includes an E-games arena, an academic writing centre & workshop room, dedicated ladies lounge and prayer room and an additional games room for all students.

The new multipurpose hall was the venue for performances by groups of Indian students to commemorate the India Republic Day. This was followed by boomerang decoration and mouth brush painting competitions.
Things then moved outdoors with a Toss the Koala competition which involved tossing a stuffed koala bear into a basketball hoop.
This was followed by some energetic 4v4 beach volleyball organised in the sandy area next to the University.

Later, prizes were awarded to the recent UOWD winning team at the Sympulse sports event in India. Everyone then enjoyed a traditional Australian sausage sizzle accompanied by some Australian music . All proceeds from the event were donated to the Queensland Flood Relief Fund.
