First intra - university public speaking competition at UOWD

Tuesday, 12 April, 2011

The Public Speaking Club organised the first Intra - University Speaking Competition. This was an important mile-stone as the Club has only organised and participated in Inter University events previously.

The competition categories included public address, impromptu and story telling.

Judges Dr Alma Kadragic , Academic Program Developer UOWD and Odelia Xavier, UOWD Alumni and editor of UOWD Alumni newsletter Stay Connected were impressed by the students performance and had valuable advice to give them. Dr Kadragic encouraged the participants to develop their own style and pointed out that the participants displayed varied styles all of which were acceptable. The judges spend time with individual students critiquing their performance.
Milan Sindahv the President of the Club and Insiya Lokhandwala the Vice President did an impeccable job behind the scenes meticulously organising every aspect of the competition.
The event also kicked off the debate series and the Club hopes to hold monthly events.

Speaking and listening to a highly intelligent group of students increased my confidence. I was more convinced that words have the power to shape situations and inspire transformation. I was glad that in my speech about discrimination, I was able to tell a story and make a point.
