A group of students from UOWDs Faculty of Computer Science & Engineering has been selected as one of the top four winners at the regional finals for the Microsoft Imagine Cup.
The team, Ear-It, comprising Bhavik Salvi, Shawn Frank, Rashida Daruwala and Ronak Dave, mentored by Dr. Cath Todd, developed a novel pure tone audiometer mobile application that screens, diagnoses and makes recommendations for hearing loss. The software also offers a function for white noise generation that can filter out loud background noise and provide a soothing effect for the listener (for example, in construction work).
This project was undertaken in conjunction with audiologist Dr. Rana Batterjee at the ENT Department, American Hospital in Dubai. The ENT department is very pleased with the result and the UOWD team will be co-ordinating with them further to establish a booth at the international finals in Poland to create awareness of the importance of early screening and diagnosis of hearing loss using the application developed by the UOWD team.
The Microsoft Imagine Cup competition saw five teams from the UAE, three from Oman, two from Kuwait and one from Bahrain participate. One from each country was selected to represent at the finals.
The team looks forward to representing UOWD in the finals, in Poland in July.
