Budding sportsmen and women representing the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) bought home five medals from the annual BITS Pilani university sports festival last week, further demonstrating UOWD’s credentials in the sporting arena.UOWD’s women’s volleyball team was crowned champions of their event after a nail-biting final against Heriot Watt University which saw the team win 2-0; whilst Nikil Peter stormed the 100m race to bring another gold medal home for the UOWD. The women’s basketball team and throwball team took the runners up medals in their respective competitions and sprinter Jeet Singh won bronze for his efforts in the Boys 200m race. The inter-university sports competition is now in its 12th year and this year saw more than 1000 students representing 21 universities and colleges from across the UAE take part in a number of sporting competitions, including football, cricket, badminton, volleyball, tablet tennis, athletics and chess. UOWD’s successful performance in this year’s competition builds on their success in 2013, where the University won four medals in basketball, throwball, volleyball and the 400m.Florence Pagdanganan, UOWD’s Volleyball Captain, said of this year’s success: “It was an honour to win and a privilege to be able to take home the trophy for UOWD. I am very lucky to be part of a team who are so dedicated to playing volleyball to such a high standard.”Franky Barreto, Manager of UOWD Student Services, said: “UOWD’s sports teams show time and time again that they’re a force to be reckoned with and the great results of this year’s BITS Pilani tournament is a testament to this. We are looking forward to some great results at our own forthcoming sports festival.”
