UOWD won second place in the inter-college debate organised for Nigerian students by the Nigerian Business Council on 12 February, 2011.
The purpose of the debate was to promote academic excellence and to foster Nigerian youth's contribution to socio-economic development of the country. UOWD students presented a well researched and passionately articulated series of arguments to establish their point that 'Rural development was most important for Nigeria's economic development'.
Winning the first round which saw debate of exceptional brilliance, the UOWD team comprising Fountain Abani and Olayinka Daniel entered the final round. In the discussion session the debaters were grilled by senior diplomats, entrepreneurs and professionals who were in the house. The UOWD team won audience appreciation as they displayed sound knowledge and uncommon decorum.
Unfortunately, the judging panel which consisted of a senior medical professional, practising judge and a professor from the American University of Sharjah could not come to a consensus regarding the final winner. A tie breaker was posed to both teams and after much deliberation our opponents the Canadian University in Dubai were announced winners in the final round.
