Events and Milestones
The University’s 25th anniversary year witnessed spectacular celebrations and significant milestones that will take their own place in UOWD history. Here’s a snapshot of some of the highlights from 2018.
Launch of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Health
Bringing together a diverse portfolio of new and emerging academic programs in Education, Communication and Nursing, the School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Health was inaugurated in our 25th anniversary year. The School will soon be the home of the flagship Bachelor of Communication and Media, which will offer majors in Digital and Social Media, Visual Communication and Design, Global Screen Media, and Marketing Communication and Advertising.
Inauguration of UOWD College
This year also saw the inauguration of the new UOWD College to provide a supportive learning environment where students can build upon their skills and knowledge through the delivery of quality language teaching, testing and academic pathway programs. The new academic College aims to empower prospective students for future learning and workplace opportunities.
Anniversary Gala Dinner
The centre-piece of our anniversary celebrations brought together distinguished guests at a gala dinner to commemorate the University’s 25 years of Academic Excellence in the UAE. Hosted by UOWD President, Professor Mohamed-Vall M. Salem ZEIN, guests included His Excellency Ian Halliday, Australian Consul-General Dubai and General Manager - Middle East, Africa and Turkey, Australian Trade and Investment Commission; Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, University of Wollongong (UOW) Vice-Chancellor; and Professor Alex Frino, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, UOW.
International recognition for UOWD Language Centre
The English Language Centre at UOWD was awarded the IDP Global Excellence in Customer Service Award during an event held in Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam. The UOWD IELTS team was recognised for their customer-centric approach with a commitment towards maintaining and improving the candidate experience and providing training to staff in meeting testing standards, at the same time as offering excellent customer service.
NSW Ministerial visit
The New South Wales Minister for Primary Industries, Regional Water, and Trade and Industry, the Honourable Niall Mark Blair, MLC, came to UOWD as part of an official visit to the UAE and to congratulate the University on celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Minister undertook a campus tour to view the facilities of the University, which included the state-of-the-art Simulation and Smart Systems Research Centre, renowned for the design and development of innovative, advanced hardware and software solutions in simulation and smart systems, in a diverse range of fields including health, education, urban planning, sustainability, engineering, and computing.
Landmark Graduation Ceremony
During UOWD’s 25th anniversary year, the University celebrated the award of its first Master of Business in Innovation & Entrepreneurship degree to Emirati student, Faris Ali. Faris was full of praise for the hands-on practical knowledge he developed to become an entrepreneur and an innovator, and valued the opportunity to learn about leadership and the fundamentals of establishing and running a business through insights from many local success stories.
