Alumni Awards Guidelines

Introduction

The UOWD Alumni Awards have been established to:

  • Recognise the many achievements of UOWD alumni, both professionally and personally
  • Engage alumni with the University
  • Allow the Alumni Relations Team to learn more about the achievements of alumni and to share these achievements with the University and our communities

The Awards will allow the University to recognise the professional and personal contribution that UOWD alumni make to the enrichment of their profession, their community and to the advancement of society.

Award Categories

The Awards are made up of five categories. All categories are open to UOWD alumni, which is defined as below:

Alumni - UOWD graduates including UOWD Honorary Award recipients

  • Category A: University of Wollongong in Dubai Alumni Award for Professional Excellence
  • Category B: University of Wollongong in Dubai Alumni Award for Research and Innovation
  • Category C: University of Wollongong in Dubai Young Alumni Award
  • Category D: University of Wollongong in Dubai Alumni Award for Social Impact
  • Category E: University of Wollongong in Dubai Alumni Award for Inspiring Women

Presentation of Award

The Alumni Awards will be presented during a formal, annual function, celebrating our valued UOWD alumni.

Each Award will be in the form of a trophy and citation. The Alumni Awards will be presented during a formal presentation function, celebrating our valued UOWD alumni..

Selection Criteria

Alumni Award for Professional Excellence

Will be awarded to an alumnus who:

  • Has achieved sustained success throughout their career that is noteworthy and exceptional.
  • Demonstrates sustained contribution to their profession at local, national and/or international levels.
  • Accomplishment(s) raise their profile and standing within their community, country or internationally and/or bring greater recognition to their profession.

Alumni Award for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Will be awarded to an outstanding alumnus who:

  • Demonstrates sustained contribution in their field by research, practise and innovation at local, national and/or international levels.
  • Has achieved recognition at national and/ or international levels.
  • Demonstrates the impact of their research and innovation.
  • Has demonstrated accomplishment(s) that raise their profile and standing within their community, country or internationally and/or bring greater recognition to their field of research, practice or innovation.

Young Alumni Award

Will be awarded to an alumnus who:

  • Is 35 years or younger in the year of the award
  • Demonstrates significant contribution to their profession and/or community at local, national and/or international levels. Please provide evidence.
  • Demonstrates significant positive impact likely to be an inspiration to the next generation of graduates and the community at large
  • Demonstrates a strong entrepreneurial mind-set, willingness to take risks, engages others, faces ambiguity with enthusiasm, leads others to new achievements

Alumni Award for Social Impact

Will be awarded to an alumnus who:

  • Demonstrates the positive impact they have had on a/the community through their work in social innovation within the profit, non-profit or public sector; or
  • Demonstrates  significant, long-term impact of their contribution to the Community and/or University
  • Evidence of impact may include but is not limited to:
  • Demonstrated positive impact on a community arising from social innovation; including, but not limited to;  social enterprise, corporate social responsibility, volunteerism and community development
  • Verification of enduring and positive outcomes for the community and/or University

Alumni Award for Inspiring Women

Will be awarded to an alumnus who:

  • Has achieved a measurable and sustained contribution to the advancement of women in their organisation, industry or community
  • Demonstrates achievements in overcoming the gender challenges faced and key strategies for overcoming them.
  • Demonstrates results ensuring that goals turn into action and pay off for the organization
  • Exhibit leadership skills in their field of expertise, evidence of investing in self-development, self-awareness and flexibility, building communication and collaboration, influencing others, personal integrity

Conditions of Nomination

  • Nominations in all categories can be made by a University of Wollongong in Dubai alumnus, staff member or a member of the public
  • At least one referee, who is not the nominator, is required to complete a statement to support the official nomination for the Award
  • Alumni Relations Office Staff and members of the selection committee may not be nominated
  • UOWD Ltd. Board members or members of the Senior Executive of the University of Wollongong in Dubai may not be nominated
  • Alumni Relations Office Staff may not submit nominations or act as a referee to a nomination
  • Committee members who have any involvement in a nomination may not participate in the Committee’s deliberations and decisions regarding that nomination.
  • The decision of the committee is final and no correspondence will be entered in to.

Nomination Process

In accordance with the Honorary Awards procedure, the nominator must ensure the following supporting documentation is included:

Completed Nomination Form including;

  • Contact details of nominee and nominator (compulsory)
  • Statement(s) from at least one referee to support the nomination who is not the nominator (compulsory)
  • Nominee’s most recent CV (compulsory)
  • Other documents to support the nomination (optional) – eg: newspaper articles, statement of awards, etc.

Finalists and recipients of Alumni Awards will be advised in writing of the outcome of their nomination prior to receiving an invitation to attend the Fellowship and Alumni Awards Dinner.

Nominees who are not selected as a finalist or recipient of an Alumni Award will not be notified by the Alumni Relations Office. It is the discretion of the Nominator as to whether or not they would like to advise the nominee of the outcome of the nomination (as many nominations are made in confidence).

Selection Committee

The Ceremonial and Honorary Awards Committee considers nominations and makes recommendations to the UOWD Ltd Board, under approved procedures and criteria. The Ceremonial and Honorary Awards Committee determines successful candidates for the Alumni Awards.
 
The Committee is chaired by the Chair of the UOWD Ltd Board and also includes the UOW Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International),CEO of UOWD Ltd, UOWD President, one director of the UOWD Ltd Board, nominated by the CEO and approved by the Chair.
