Marhaba - Welcome to Dubai!

Dubai International Airport is world-renowned, handling around 30 million passengers annually and connecting over 160 destinations with more than 110 airlines. The Airport has three terminals, with Terminals 1 and 2 handling both international and domestic flights from airlines around the world, and Terminal 3 being for the exclusive use of Emirates Airlines and its passengers.  Terminals are large and airy, well signed, and full of friendly, helpful staff.

Before departing their country of origin, Dubai-bound passengers should check visa requirements for entry into Dubai. Upon arrival at the airport, passengers should proceed to passport control where they can present their visas or be given visas upon arrival, depending on nationality. At this point, passports are stamped with an entry date – most visit visas are valid for 30 days from the date on the entry stamp, although some visas (such as transit visas) have a shorter validity time.

For those who require assistance with baggage collection, wheelchair services, it may be worthwhile booking Marhaba Services (the welcoming service within the airport) before you depart for Dubai.

Dubai Online offers a comprehensive guide to the emirate.

Dubai Duty Free Services

Although it is not possible to purchase alcohol in supermarkets, it is possible to make Duty Free purchases including tobacco and alcohol products, in the baggage collection area at Dubai International airport. Alcohol prices may seem high for some visitors, but you can bring purchases from your home country. Be mindful of customs restrictions and limit yourself to one or two bottles per person. Visitors are also able to purchase alcohol from either African and Eastern or MMI liquor shops by presenting their passport.

Depending on your chosen hotel, it will also be possible to purchase alcohol in bars and restaurants.  Some hotels in Dubai are designated as “Family” properties – these hotels do not sell alcoholic beverages, but permit private consumption in guest rooms.

Cash and Currency

When you enter the arrivals hall, directly from baggage collection, there are a number of ATM’s and also currency exchange services.

Getting around

Dubai Metro

There are a number of options for your transfer from DXB to your hotel or the conference venue.  Depending on your arrival time, it is possible to access the Dubai Metro from Terminals 1 and 3.  This takes you on the RED line, as mentioned in our Dubai Metro information.  We recommend purchasing a RED ticket (from the station or ticketing booth) which can be loaded with up to 10 trips.  Please note that the Dubai Metro is not a 24-hour service.

Taxi Services

Dubai traffic can busy and difficult to navigate, so use a taxi for road journeys. For official taxi services, simply follow the signs in the arrivals terminal and join the queue.  The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority taxis are beige with different coloured roofs (denoting different providers).  The starting fee from the airport is normally 25 dirhams (around 5 Euros) and meters are used.

Please note that taxis with a PINK roof are for women and families only--not for single, or groups of, men--and have women drivers.  Most Dubai taxis will typically be Toyota or Nissan models. Larger taxis are available for groups.

There are also Limousine services – normally Lexus, Tesla, or Infiniti vehicles.  These are a comfortable but more expensive option.

Further information on public transport services in Dubai is available from the RTA website.

Leaving Dubai

When you leave Dubai, both Terminals 1 and 3 have a number of restaurants, cafes, and shopping experiences.  Alcohol may be consumed in the bars and restaurants (where available).  You will also be able to purchase any souvenirs and a wide range of other goods in the airport terminal before boarding.

Dining in Dubai

The diverse population and mix of cultures in Dubai result in the availability of a wide range of cuisine. Some of our shopping malls offer excellent choices, from snacks right through to fine-dining experiences. The conference is located next to Dubai Mall, which provides numerous options.

The registration fee includes lunches and breaks with refreshments throughout the conference days, a drinks reception, and a Gala Dinner, however we recommend that you try some of the wonderful choices available!

Restaurants within licensed hotels will have ranges of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and a plethora of dining choices. From fast-food, to a la carte, to sumptuous buffets…it can be limitless. Most of the hotels that we have listed (although this is definitely not an exhaustive list) are adjacent to shops and supermarkets where you can buy goods from around the world.
