A Fun Australia Day Celebration at UOWD

Sunday, 05 February, 2012

UOWD celebrated Australia Day on February 1 with a day-long program of fun events and competitions with a large number of students and faculty members participating.

Students took part in competitions like Decorate a Boomerang, Eat a Vegemite sandwich, Sip ‘Chai’ through a Tim tam and Playing the Didgeridoo. Other attractions included a Sausage Sizzle, Lamingtons, face painting, a drumming session, Aussie music as well as Indian entertainment.

The event also saw a six-a-side cricket match between Teams ‘Australia’ and ‘India’ featuring students and staff of UOWD. Batting first, Australia were restricted to 42 for 6, and India went on to win the clash comfortably. The players, wearing the colours of Australia and India, were cheered by a large number of students.

Professor Ghassan Aouad, President of UOWD, was the guest of honour at the prize distribution ceremony, which was attended among others by Raymi van der Spek, Executive Director of Strategic Development at UOWD and faculty members.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Ghassan hailed the rich Australian heritage of UOWD and urged the students to take advantage of the academic and extra curricular opportunities available at the university. He thanked all the participants for making the Australia Day a resounding success.

The President also gave away certificates to the winners of the annual Dean’s List and spring scholarships. A total of 98 scholarships were awarded to new and re-enrolling students, valued at over AED 2.3 million.
