Hat trick of victories for UOWD men’s football team

Sunday, 22 December, 2013

The UOWD men’s football team has taken the champion’s trophy in the recent Manipal Dubai Sports Festival, giving them a hat trick of victories in competitive tournaments this semester.

The team defeated the University of Sharjah by a 2-0 margin to add to their victories in the Dulsco Futsal tournament and the SP Jain inter-university football tournament held earlier in the semester.

UOWD teams also competed in table tennis, badminton, cricket, basketball, throwball and volleyball competitions at the event. The women’s throwball team once again proved their supremacy by winning the competition defeating hosts Manipal University by an easy 2-0 set victory, while the men’s basketball team secured second place, putting up a good fight against hot favourites American University of Sharjah in the finals, with the score reading 29-41 at the final whistle.

Ten universities took part in the festival, which was the second annual tournament hosted by Manipal University.

Ariyan Ajdari, captain of UOWD’s winning football team said, “This tournament represents our biggest achievement as we had to overcome some of the toughest university teams to take the champion’s trophy. We hope this victory will be the start of even bigger things to come; we have worked hard to build a winning team and we are united and here to stay.”
