- Dr Soly Mathew Biju
Dr Soly Mathew Biju is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered IT Professional with over 25 years of experience spanning industry, academia, research, and academic leadership. As an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, she brings together deep technical expertise, institutional leadership, and a strong commitment to innovation in teaching and research.
Dr Biju holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and has achieved Chartered Engineer (CEng) status awarded by the Engineering Council (UK). She is a Chartered IT Professional (CITP), a Fellow of BCS (UK), and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK. She is also an ISTQB-certified software testing professional. These distinctions reflect sustained professional excellence and international recognition in both engineering and computing.
From 2022 to 2024, Dr Biju served as Director for Computer Science (Discipline Leader), where she provided academic leadership in curriculum development, quality assurance, and strategic program growth. At UOWD, she also leads the Global Health and Wellbeing Research Cluster, advancing interdisciplinary research initiatives that integrate computing with real-world societal impact.
Her academic career has been complemented by substantial industry experience. Prior to joining UOWD, Dr Biju worked with British Airways, where she led enterprise-level technical teams supporting Windows NT and Lotus Notes operations across Heathrow, UK, and Pune, India. This industry background continues to inform her applied research and teaching approach, ensuring strong alignment between technical theory and practical implementation.
Dr Biju has been engaged in teaching, training, network administration, and software development since 1999. Before joining UOWD, she worked with several international institutions, including the University of Wales, Robert Kennedy College, and Champlain College. A certified online instructor, she has contributed extensively to the development of digital learning environments and online course design, and has delivered faculty development workshops on e-learning platforms such as WebCT and Blackboard.
Her research interests span machine learning, cybersecurity, software testing, cryptography, agile software development, programming techniques, and innovation in digital pedagogy. She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and edited technical books, and regularly presents at and reviews for national and international conferences and journals. She has organised machine learning and AI workshops at ACM conferences and has served in various leadership capacities, including scientific committee member, organising committee member, session chair, and content chair at major conferences.
Dr Biju has secured multiple research grants and holds several patents, reflecting her commitment to advancing both theoretical knowledge and applied technological solutions. She is frequently invited as a keynote speaker at international conferences, where she shares insights on emerging technologies, cybersecurity, and the evolving landscape of computer science education.
Her contributions to teaching have been recognised with multiple nominations for Teaching Excellence and Research Excellence Awards at UOWD. She received the prestigious UOWD Teaching Excellence Award in 2012, 2015, and 2019, and was honoured with the Amity Global Academic Excellence Award in 2020.
Through her combined expertise in engineering, computing, academic leadership, and digital innovation, Dr Soly Mathew Biju continues to play a significant role in shaping the future of computer science education and research at UOWD and beyond.

She leads the Global Health and Wellbeing Cluster at UOWD. Her research interests include machine learning, data security, software testing, cryptography, e-learning, innovations in teaching, agile software development, online teaching, network security and programming techniques.
