  • Green Hydrogen: The Game-Changer in the UAE’s Clean Energy Landscape

Green Hydrogen: The Game-Changer in the UAE’s Clean Energy Landscape

Thursday, 10 October, 2024

The future of green hydrogen in the UAE is exceptionally bright. With projections that the hydrogen economy could create over 180,000 jobs by 2031—and more than 500,000 by 2050—the UAE is on track to become a global leader in hydrogen technology and production. But what exactly makes green hydrogen so promising?

At its core, green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy, such as solar or wind power, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike traditional energy sources like oil and gas, the process doesn’t emit any carbon dioxide, making green hydrogen a key solution for reducing emissions and combating climate change. For a country like the UAE, which is heavily reliant on industries that produce significant carbon emissions, green hydrogen offers a pathway to achieve ambitious sustainability goals without sacrificing economic growth.

Why Green Hydrogen Matters for the UAE

Green hydrogen isn’t just a new energy source—it’s a transformative solution for industries that have been historically difficult to decarbonize. This includes sectors like steel, aluminium, and construction, which are essential to the UAE’s economy. By switching to green hydrogen, these industries can significantly reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining their production levels.

As Dr Stephen Wilkinson, UOWD's Research Director, explains: “Green hydrogen is set to revolutionize several key industries in the UAE. Given the country’s reliance on energy-intensive sectors like steel and aluminium, it’s clear that green hydrogen offers a powerful solution to drastically reduce emissions while maintaining industrial growth.”

In addition, green hydrogen has the potential to transform the transportation sector. Heavy transport, shipping, and even aviation, all of which are vital to the UAE's global connectivity, can significantly benefit from this clean fuel. The UAE’s vast solar capacity allows it to produce green hydrogen at a lower cost, giving the country a competitive edge in both local use and global export.

Current Projects and Initiatives in the UAE

The UAE is already leading the way in green hydrogen projects, with several initiatives underway. One of the most notable is Dubai’s green hydrogen production plant, launched in 2021 in partnership with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Siemens, and Expo 2020. This project uses solar energy to produce hydrogen, demonstrating how renewable resources can be harnessed for sustainable energy solutions.

“Projects like the DEWA green hydrogen plant show the UAE’s commitment to decarbonizing its economy and leading by example,” says Dr Wilkinson. “At UOWD, we’re contributing by offering executive learning courses that equip professionals with the skills needed to drive this innovation forward.”

Other significant projects include a green hydrogen pilot plant in Masdar City focused on transport applications and a collaboration between Emirates Steel and TAQA to produce green steel using hydrogen. These initiatives are laying the foundation for widespread adoption of hydrogen technologies in the coming years.

A Pillar of the UAE’s Sustainability Strategy

Green hydrogen is integral to the UAE’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality. By 2050, sectors like transportation and heavy industry are expected to account for 50% of the demand for green hydrogen. This means that green hydrogen will play a key role in decarbonizing industries that are otherwise difficult to make sustainable.

To put it simply, green hydrogen allows the UAE to continue thriving economically while reducing its carbon emissions. It’s a win-win solution. “By 2050, the majority of green hydrogen demand in the UAE is projected to come from industries like transportation and steel production,” says Dr Wilkinson. “This means that the UAE isn’t just adopting green hydrogen—it’s making it an integral part of its net-zero strategy.”

The UAE’s Role as a Global Exporter of Green Hydrogen

The UAE’s geographic location and trade partnerships make it perfectly positioned to export green hydrogen to global markets. Countries like Japan and South Korea have already expressed interest in importing green hydrogen, and the European Union is expected to be a major customer as well. With its vast renewable resources and ability to produce hydrogen at competitive costs, the UAE is set to become a leading supplier in the global hydrogen market.

“The UAE’s ability to produce green hydrogen on a large scale, combined with its strategic location, makes it a key player in the global hydrogen supply chain,” explains Dr Wilkinson. “This opens up incredible opportunities for both economic growth and environmental leadership on a global stage.”

What’s Next for Green Hydrogen in the UAE?

Looking ahead, the UAE’s green hydrogen sector is poised for remarkable growth. By 2031, the country aims to produce 1.4 million tonnes of hydrogen per year, with plans to increase this output tenfold by 2050. Along with creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, the UAE’s investments in green hydrogen will position it as a global leader in this emerging field.

“As the world transitions to cleaner energy sources, green hydrogen will play a critical role,” says Dr Wilkinson. “At UOWD, we’re excited to be part of this journey, equipping professionals with the expertise needed to lead in this rapidly growing sector.”

Our executive learning courses in green hydrogen technology, delivered alongside independent experts from Imperial College London and UOWD underscores our commitment to advancing the UAE’s clean energy ambitions. These courses are designed to prepare industry leaders, engineers, and policymakers for the opportunities and challenges ahead in green hydrogen innovation.
