- Dr Pallavi Ranjan
Dr Pallavi Ranjan is an Assistant Professor of AI and Big Data in the School of Computer Science at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, where she is teaching on the Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence programme. She completed her PhD in AI and Machine Learning in 2024. With over 16 years of full-time academic experience across the Middle East and India, she brings a rare combination of research depth, teaching excellence, and institutional leadership to everything she does.
Prior to joining the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Dr Ranjan worked as Discipline Lead of the School of IT at Murdoch University Dubai, where she played a key role in shaping the Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems programme. Her sustained contributions to academia and industry were recognized with the Inspirational Women Leader Award 2025, presented jointly by Logitech, Qualcomm, and Fortinet — a testament to her influence both within and beyond the university.
Dr Ranjan's research centers on developing novel algorithms in computer vision, image processing, generative AI, data science, and deep learning, with applications spanning remote sensing, hyperspectral imaging (HSI), earth sciences, urban development, and disaster management. She has published over 35 papers in SCI/E-indexed journals and international conferences, authored book chapters, and filed several patents with the India Patent Office and the Australian Government. She has led tracks at international conferences including COMSIA 2026 and ICPDN 2026 and has served as Guest Editor of the Journal of Electronic Imaging.
A firm believer that teaching, industry, and research are inseparable pillars of academia, Dr Ranjan has chaired sessions at leading international conferences and organized and hosted conferences in partnership with the British Computer Society, CISCO, Oracle MEA, and the Robotics Club at The Assembly during her tenure at Middlesex University Dubai. She was honored with the Commendable Research Award from Delhi Technological University in recognition of her outstanding research contributions to the field. Deeply committed to empowering women to pursue careers in science and technology, she previously served as Head of the Oracle Academy MEA and remains an active Senior Member of IEEE.

Dr Pallavi's research spans several key areas in Artificial Intelligence:
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Design and application of machine learning, deep learning, and large language models (LLMs) for predictive analytics, classification, and pattern recognition. Includes research into explainable AI (XAI) to ensure transparent and interpretable model decisions across high-stakes domains including healthcare, finance, and remote sensing.
- Computer Vision & Image Processing: Development of novel deep learning architectures including CNNs, Siamese networks, GANs, and transformer-based models for object detection, segmentation, hyperspectral image classification, and visual understanding tasks.
- Generative AI & Few-Shot Learning: Investigation of generative adversarial networks, diffusion models, and autoencoder-enhanced architectures for data synthesis and augmentation. Research into few-shot and zero-shot learning frameworks that generalise effectively from minimal labelled data in resource-constrained environments.
- Multimodal & NLP Systems: Exploration of multimodal AI systems that integrate visual, textual, and spectral data sources. Research into natural language processing and large language models for intelligent document analysis, semantic understanding, and AI-driven communication.
- Hyperspectral, Multispectral & Satellite Imaging: Specialised deep learning models for processing and classifying hyperspectral and multispectral satellite data, with applications spanning environmental monitoring, land use mapping, urban development, and geospatial intelligence.
- Remote Sensing, Earth Sciences & Disaster Management: Application of AI and satellite imaging to analyse geophysical and environmental data, support urban mapping and smart city development, and build intelligent early-warning and risk assessment systems for emergency preparedness and disaster response.
- Data Science & Visualisation: Application of statistical modelling, data analytics, and visualisation techniques to extract actionable insights from large and complex datasets, with emphasis on real-world deployment in finance, education, and scientific research.
