“Curiosity led me from jewellery to flowers—and finally to tomatoes. Every pivot reminded me that purpose and impact can be cultivated anywhere.” – Mariam Adel Ghanem
From a Master of Quality Management (MQM) graduate at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) to leading the Value-Added Products division at Pure Harvest Smart Farms, Mariam Adel Ghanem has built a career on reinvention and purpose-driven innovation.
After completing her degree in 2017, Mariam’s professional journey took unconventional turns. She began in hospital administration, then ventured into jewellery, moved on to floral retail, and ultimately found her mission in agritech and fast-moving consumer goods. Each industry switch meant learning from scratch, yet every pivot sharpened her adaptability. “It’s a powerful reminder that true talent and determination can shine in any industry, no matter where you begin,” she says.
Today, at Pure Harvest Smart Farms, Mariam focuses on sustainable food innovation—highlighted by turning surplus harvests into premium, shelf-ready products that cut waste and add value. “One of my proudest moments was seeing our Strawberry Preserve hit the shelves,” she recalls.
Mariam credits her time at UOWD for equipping her with the critical-thinking toolkit that anchors her work. “UOWD was life-changing. It taught me to lead with intention and communicate across cultures—skills that are essential in a region that embraces diversity and forward-thinking,” she explains. Late-night brainstorming sessions, professors who pushed her to dig deeper, and a campus community united by ambition remain some of her fondest memories.
The driving force behind her success is simple: leave everything better than she found it. Whether by reducing food waste, mentoring colleagues, or championing sustainable practices, Mariam is motivated by lasting impact. Yet the road hasn’t been without setbacks. Supply-chain delays once threatened to derail a major launch. “I felt defeated,” she admits. “But reconnecting with the ‘why’ and leaning on my team turned a near-failure into a stronger comeback.”
Outside the greenhouse, Mariam recharges in nature—hiking, reading by the beach, and discovering restaurants that feature Pure Harvest produce. Travel and food keep her curiosity alive and her palate inspired.
Looking ahead, she envisions expanding value-added lines that fight waste and deepen sustainability. “I’m excited to keep innovating and meeting people who share this mission,” she says.
Her advice to UOWD students stepping into the workforce: “Don’t rush. Growth takes time, and every experience—especially the tough ones—has something to teach you. Lead with kindness, stay curious, and trust your values to guide the way.”
Mariam Adel Ghanem’s story is a testament to the power of following curiosity wherever it leads you—be it jewels, blooms, or the humble tomato.
