Marisa Mastroianni

Group CEO UOW Enterprises and Managing Director

Marisa Mastroianni, is Group Chief Executive Officer of UOW Enterprises and Managing Director of the Board. Since her appointment Marisa has focused on driving organisational change that has delivered academic quality and outstanding operational results. Ms Mastroianni leads an international team of highly skilled professionals with operations in Australia (UOW College) and offshore in Dubai (University of Wollongong in Dubai) and Hong Kong (CCCU).

Ms Mastroianni is an experienced CEO and Non-Executive Director with expertise in strategic and operational planning, mergers and acquisitions, financial and risk management, corporate governance and change management. Previously Marisa has held senior financial and executive roles the in the maritime, health, retirement and aged care sectors.
Ms Mastroianni holds a Bachelor and Master of Commerce, is a Fellow of CPA Australia, Assoc. Fellow of AIM and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Mr Peter Robson AO

Peter Robson has established a unique network throughout Australian industry and government. He has worked as an engineer in Australian and Asian manufacturing firms at both operational and senior executive levels, as well as the Chief Executive Officer of the largest trade union in Australia (CPSU). During this time Peter was also a member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. 
Peter has had a long association with UOW Dubai and UOW College and his current roles and responsibilities within UOWE are: 

  • Chairman of the Board 
  • Chairman of the Remuneration Committee 
  • Chairman of UOWD Ceremonial and Honorary Awards Committee 
  • Member of UOWD External Advisory Council 

Peter has been an adviser to Price Waterhouse Coopers and Australian superannuation funds. Peter is also a director and member of a number of Australian and International engineering and manufacturing companies. His current roles outside of UOWE include:

Mr Gregory West

Deputy Chairman

Greg West is a Chartered Accountant. He has worked at Price Waterhouse and in senior finance executive roles in investment banking with Bankers Trust, Bain & Company, Deutsche Bank and NZI. He was CFO at Australia’s largest credit union. Mr West’s clients include higher education institutions, financial services corporations and, over the last decade, ASX listed mid-cap biotech companies and listed start-ups.

Professor Paul Wellings CBE

Executive Director - Board

Professor Paul Wellings assumed the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wollongong in January 2012, becoming the University’s fourth Vice-Chancellor.
Prior to his current role, Professor Wellings held the position of Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University. He has previously been a Director of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the Cumbrian Rural Regeneration Company. In 2006 he was appointed to the board of UUK and Chair of UUK's International European Policy Committee, and a board member of HEFCE, Chair of HEFCE's Research Committee. He is also a board member of Bundanoon Trust.
Born in Nottingham and educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School and the universities of London, Durham and East Anglia, Prof. Wellings began his career as a NERC Research Fellow and moved to Australia as a research scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), becoming Chief of the Entomology Division in 1995. From 1997 to 1999 he was Head of the Innovation and Science Division, Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Canberra, and in 1999 he became Deputy Chief Executive of CSIRO.
Professor Wellings was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to higher education. He received an Honorary DSc from Lancaster University in 2014.

Professor Joe Chicharo

Professor Joe Chicharo was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) in February 2016. Prior to his current role, Professor Chicharo held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Strategy) from 2015-2016, the role of  Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) from 2010-2015 and previous to that,   Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) from 2008-2010.

The role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) takes a leadership responsibility for providing services, programs and resources that support UOW staff and students and foster innovative teaching and learning, to enhance University-wide educational practice. The Academic portfolio also oversees Strategic Planning and Strategic Marketing & Communications at the University.

Professor Chicharo joined the University of Wollongong in 1985 as a Lecturer within the School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering. Prior to this appointment Professor Chicharo spent ten years working in the steel industry (BHP) firstly as a degree Trainee and subsequently as an Electrical Engineer and Senior Engineer. He has a distinguished academic and research track record having published over 200 refereed papers in prestigious journals and conferences. His research contributions are well cited and he has been the recipient of a number of best paper prizes such as by the IEEE. Professor Chicharo has been highly successful in attracting nationally competitive research grants as well as substantial industry sponsorship for research work at UOW. He continues to be an active researcher and supervisor of HDR students.
Whilst at the University of Wollongong, Professor Chicharo served as the Dean of Informatics (2003-2008), Head of the School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering (2002-2003), Research Director of the CRC for Smart Internet Technology (2000-2002), Managing Director of the Telecommunications and Information Technology Research (TITR) Institute (1999-2001) and Director of the Switched Networks Research Centre (1995-1998) amongst other roles.
Professor Chicharo has also served as the inaugural President of the Australian Council of Deans Information, Communications and Technology. He served as the Chair of the Mathematical, Information and Computing Sciences (Cluster 5), Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2010 assessment exercise. He was Chair of the Australian Research Council - Mathematics, Information and Communication Sciences Panel (2005-2007). He served as an Editor of the IEEE Transaction on Circuits and Systems, Part II (1998-2000). He is the External Examiner for the M.Sc.(Eng.) degree programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering and Computer and Information Technology at the University of Hong Kong since 2004.
Professor Chicharo has had a long term interest with international academic collaboration. He has established a number of highly successful off-shore educational programs and research activities during his term as Dean of the Faculty of Informatics. He holds a number of Adjunct/Honorary Professorial appointments at various Universities overseas where he continues to maintain active collaboration in his area of research interest.

Mr Damien Israel

Executive Director - Board

As Chief Finance Officer (CFO), Damien’s primary responsibility is the protection and prudent management of the University’s resources. His portfolio includes the Divisions of Financial Services, Information Management and Technology Services, Commercial Developments Unit, Institutional Research and Government Reporting, Business Improvement and Assurance, and the Print Services Unit.
The CFO is secretary to the Risk, Audit and Compliance Committee of the University Council. In this role, Damien works closely with the Business Assurance Manager on the University’s risk management and audit plans.
The CFO is also executive lead for the development of the University’s Innovation Campus through the Commercial Developments Unit.
Damien has worked for the University since 2001, previously holding the role of Director of Financial Services. Prior to joining the University, Damien’s career was with the NSW Health system occupying a range of senior executive posts and participating in a number of State-wide initiatives involving financial and information systems and resource distribution.
Damien is committed to ensuring strong commercial outcomes for the University and ensuring the long term sustainability of the institution. His professional interests are in finding better ways to use resources through benchmarking performance, use of information technologies, effective business planning and implementation, and developing and leveraging commercial partnerships.
Damien is a Certified Practising Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Business and Master of Accounting, both from the Charles Sturt University.

Professor Alex Frino

Executive Director - Board

Professor Alex Frino is a distinguished international financial economist who fosters the interaction of business with academe.  He is an alumnus of UOW and Cambridge University, and is also a former Fulbright Scholar.  He is one of the best published financial economists in the world with over 100 papers in leading scholarly journals.  

He has won over $10 million in national competitive research funding and is frequently cited by the major mainstream global press. He was previously Chief Executive Officer of the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre Limited – a $100 million research installation funded by the Australian Federal Government and partnering with 20 major global financial corporations.  He has held visiting academic positions at leading Universities in Italy, New Zealand, the UK and the United States.  He has also held positions with leading financial market organisations including the Sydney Futures Exchange, Credit Suisse and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in the USA.  He is regularly called upon to act as an independent expert witness in major Australian court cases and has acted as a consultant to many large Australian listed companies.


Mr Noel Cornish

Noel Cornish’s expertise is business management. His previous roles include Chief Executive of Bluescope Steel Limited, Australian and New Zealand steel manufacturing businesses, President Northstar BHP LLC in Ohio USA and Group General Manager Whyalla Steelworks in South Australia.

Mr Robert Ryan

Non-Executive Director - Board

Robert Ryan is currently the Chief Executive of IMB Ltd, one of Australia’s largest mutual banks and longest standing mutual bank in NSW, with branches throughout the Illawarra, Sydney, NSW South Coast, Southern Highlands, ACT and in Melbourne. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he held the positions of Deputy Chief Executive, Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary of IMB.
Mr Ryan is a director of IMB Financial Planning Limited, Australian Settlements Limited and The Flagstaff Group. Prior to joining IMB, Mr Ryan held the positions of Managing Director, Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary at Australian Resources Limited.
He has extensive experience in finance and management at senior executive and Board level, has been involved in the formulation and implementation of strategic business plans and financial restructuring, staff management and development, as well as evaluation of acquisitions and divestments.
Mr Ryan completed his Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney in 1984 and Master of Commercial Law at Macquarie University in 1996.
He holds the following professional qualifications:

Dr Stewart Routledge AO

Dr Routledge is an international consultant with more than 37 years’ experience, providing a wide range of international development assistance services to deliver effective and comprehensive solutions to production, planning and management situations across the food security, aquaculture, agriculture and livestock industries.
Stewart is Managing Director of Stewart Routledge & Associates, Advisor to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (2009-2012), Adviser to the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (2009-2013) and Executive Director with GRM International Pty Ltd/RWA International/Opto International/Australian Rural Exports, subsidiaries of Consolidated Pastoral Group of Kerry Packer (1982-2009).
Dr Routledge was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to veterinary science, particularly the provision of technical assistance in developing countries, and to business through promoting Australian interests internationally.
