The Master of Media Design is an innovative postgraduate degree program that focuses on the concept and practice of Media Design. This program is not about graphic design but rather about the design thinking processes that underpin the creation and communication of media work, artefacts and projects. It aims to prepare individuals to shape the future of the media industry with strategic, user-centered, and innovative approaches to creating media artefacts that have value, utility, and meaning in today’s world.

In this program, students will not only master the design of individual media projects, but also learn to design processes, workflows, and systems, considering the interconnectedness of individual components within a broader communication ecosystem, in society, and in the world around us. Our goal is to produce forward-thinking media design professionals who can navigate the complexities of the rapidly changing media landscape and contribute to the field with thoughtful, innovative, and impactful work and media artefacts.

Graduates of this program will be leaders of the media and creative industries, using media design principles to drive change in the industry and society, focusing on user-centered approaches to creative problem-solving and media-making. As leaders in the industry, you will be adept at translating abstract concepts into engaging media experiences, shaping the future of how we create, consume, and interact with media, people, and the world around us.

Program Structure

To qualify for the Master of Media Design, a candidate shall accrue an aggregate of at least 60 credit points comprising of 42 CP of MMD core subjects, 12 CP of Research Practice.

Students from a three year bachelor's degree or a four year program without a research component will be required to take additional two subjects decided in consultation with the faculty.

  • Media Design Subjects

Core Subjects

This subject presents a thorough examination of integrated media concepts and its application, focusing on the understanding of the theoretical, methodological, and practical approaches to traditional and contemporary media processes that affect audience experience. The students explore and develop their sense of visual narratives through a broad range of case studies and data visualization within the integrated strategic communications space to articulate intended narratives, taking into consideration how images and spaces can tell stories with or without accompanying words. This subject will allow students to understand the narrative perspectives of the maker and the audience. The visual form itself will be strategically and critically examined through the construction of design campaigns and promotional materials for changing attitudes and behaviors among the plethora of external and internal factors such as motivation, perception and involvement that influence audience’s decisions.

This course focuses on critically exploring and creatively engaging storytelling techniques and conventions in film, television, and other emerging cultural forms, with a critical and creative emphasis on the flows of fictional storytelling techniques across national boundaries. Historically, this course looks at both continuities and changes that have influenced film, television, and emergent media productions and techniques across multiple national contexts. Theoretically, this course examines issues of voice, representation, and the experience of social change. Meanwhile, practically, this course pairs close, critical analysis with practical storytelling exercises. By situating film, television, and other creative narrative productions in their historical and theoretical contexts, this course is designed to build skills of critical analysis and encourage students to adopt a historically- and theoretically- grounded approach to creative production.

The Media Industry is one of the fastest growing – and most prominent – industries in the world today. The word Media is often used interchangeably, or side by side, the word technology, and rightfully so. Technology and technological innovation are key factors driving and creating change in the media industry. These changes, or disruptions, impact how we understand, interact with, make, create, share and consume Media. This makes the management of media and content, leadership in the media industry, and media innovation more important today than ever before. Management includes managing content, managing content production, managing teams and people, and managing companies. Management is not, however, automatically synonymous with leadership, which is not automatically synonymous with innovation. Media companies need leaders, managers, & innovators – and people who understand the nuanced differences between these concepts and roles will be well-positioned to thrive and succeed in their media careers. This subject will introduce students to the different eras of media management, the technologically driven changes in the media industry, and how media management, leadership and innovation are shaping the current – future of the media landscape.

The media and creative industries are constantly and rapidly evolving, and design thinking plays a crucial role in driving this change. This course explores the future impact of media design and its role in shaping the future of these industries. The course focuses on the power of process-driven approaches to media creation, and how they can be combined with digital technologies to solve real-world problems and industry challenges. The structure and design of the course will provide students with the practical experience needed to not only create advanced media artefacts within the course, but to be able to apply these skills to their own projects and careers. The course will also challenge students to consider the broader implications of their media design solutions, and how they can contribute to shaping the future of the creative industries.

The rapid technological development of the past decade has rapidly put some of the most sophisticated media production tools into the hands of everyday people. With this rapid development, we have seen a bottom-up democratization of some media spaces and a proliferation of media producers. Aided by technological advancement, we have also seen an explosion of socially-engaged media-making. This course aims to equip students to historically, theoretically, and creatively engage this moment of sociallyengaged media production. Using the documentary form as a way into exploring key critical and creative issues, this course explores issues of truth, representation, and ethics as well as intimacy and emotion in nonfiction storytelling. In this class, a number of individual projects that encourage criticality and creativity in approaching real-life subjects work hand-in-hand with a larger project that will require students, in groups, to develop, research, and produce a socially-engaged nonfiction storytelling project from working hypothesis to final cut. Taking a personal approach to documentary, this film will explore issues of social, political, ethical, and/or moral importance and will take into account audience expectations, knowledge, and experience, the historical evolution of nonfiction storytelling practice, and theoretical issues related to storytelling, truth, subjectivity, affect, and social critique.

Mediated spaces of the future will demand a creative workforce with the ability to critically evaluate new tools for specific and unique communicative potential. This subject provides a fluency in design practice, digital media-making applications and the millennial-old concepts that guide imagery production. By exploring both traditional and emerging digital media, students will not only learn to identify this potential but distil universal principles of aesthetics and design that can be applied to new creative forms. The role of design has grown from peripheral to foundational in vast array of practices. This course aims to develop deep understanding of design’s past, present and future and its impact on the world. At its core the practice is process oriented and outcome driven. Theory and concept development will lead to compelling and effective outcomes. The subject will explore new and future trends and processes as well as robust methods of making. It also aims to foster critical understanding and discourse around design and its role in the world of tomorrow.

This course focuses on emergent practices in media, art and performance with a particular focus on immersive digital/virtual environments, human-machine interaction, and communication strategies for ‘social’ platforms. As more and more of our time is spent in virtual spaces, the study of how we act, react and interact is a key component to an advanced understanding of emerging media trends and practices. In this class we will explore the world of mediated identities and perceptions surrounding these identities, giving particular attention to the use of technology in creating and designing communication strategies, methods, and stories. We’ll also examine and critique the social, political and economic disruptions caused by these emerging technology and media practices.

Design is ever-present in our daily living. Its outcomes are a vital part of the today’s media world. Communication and media practitioners rely on skillfully designed artifacts to persuade audiences and engage users. This course focuses on a process of design that leads to socially relevant and pragmatic outcomes and media expressions. During their study, students will practice and gain deeper understanding of universally applicable design principles and methods of ideation and production. Emphasis is given to the practical application of design process and real-world problem solving. The outcomes will widen student’s knowledge in areas relevant to contemporary design practice.

Research Practice

The Graduate Research Practice subject is the final course in the program, where students undertake self- directed, substantial, practice-based, research project. This subject takes place over 2 trimesters, covering 20 weeks. In the first trimester, students will have formal, structured classes focusing on research methods, research practice and writing a research proposal. These research methods classes will cover both traditional research methodologies – qualitative/quantitative – as well as more practical, media centric research methods – social media research, Internet based research, etc.

The second trimester is where students carry out their research projects. Projects can materialize in a number of formats, including a written thesis of 10,000-12,000 words, substantial, research based non-fiction films, design based research projects, or other formats as appropriate for the chosen area of study.

The research approach may be qualitative, quantitative, media/social media focused or a combination of approaches. In research practice, the output can be a thesis, project, creative work, or creative production. The topic and scope of the project must be agreed upon with the student’s advisor and the Program Director before the student settles on a final topic. This final research project will allow students to advance and hone their research skills in one of the core discipline areas of Media, Media Design, Communication and the practice of Media Making. This project will prepare them for future academic or research oriented work and further postgraduate studies (written thesis), or continued work in the media/creative industry.
