“Through communications, I found my purpose. Amplifying voices, shaping our story, and driving initiatives that empower women.” – Ahlam AlBannai
For Emirati alumna Ahlam AlBannai, communication has always been more than a job. It is a way to serve, to connect, and to give back to the community that shaped her.
Since graduating from the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) with a Master of Media and Communications in 2017, Ahlam has taken her skills across different spaces. From media and government to mentoring and entrepreneurship, her journey reflects both intention and evolution. She now serves as Director of Communications at Dubai Women Establishment, where she leads national initiatives with a focus on women’s empowerment.
Her path has been dynamic. Along the way, she launched a photography business, mentored young professionals, and began her PhD in the Philosophy of Communication. Every chapter, she says, has helped her grow into a more grounded and purpose-driven communicator.
“I have always been drawn to the power of stories,” she says. “The way a message can shift perspectives or bring people together. That is what led me to this field.”
In the early years of her career, she had to build trust in fast-moving environments. It took patience, consistency, and a strong belief in the value she could bring. “I focused on learning. I focused on delivering. And I let the work speak for itself,” she says.
Looking ahead, Ahlam hopes to create a platform that blends communication, education, and entrepreneurship. She wants to bridge research with real-world impact and help young people find their voice and grow into leadership.
She credits her time at UOWD with helping her build the mindset and skills to do just that. “What I learned went beyond theory. The courses gave me tools I still use today, like campaign planning, strategic thinking, and organisational communication,” she explains.
She remembers the long evenings spent discussing ideas with classmates from around the world. “We all brought different perspectives. Those conversations challenged me and taught me so much.” She also recalls the satisfaction of completing each milestone while balancing work, studies, and motherhood. “It made every achievement more meaningful,” she says.
Purpose is what continues to guide her. Whether she is writing a strategy document, mentoring a student, or capturing emotion through photography, Ahlam sees every project as an opportunity to make a difference. “I want to create impact. That is what drives me.”
Of course, there have been difficult moments. Juggling a full-time leadership role, academic research, and family life has not always been easy. “There were days when I felt completely drained. But I leaned on my faith. I leaned on my family. And I reminded myself why I began.”
In her free time, she finds joy behind the lens. Photography, for her, is more than a hobby. It is a way of noticing. A way of telling stories without speaking. She also enjoys reading about leadership and culture, exploring new places, and spending time with her children.
For students entering the workforce, Ahlam shares a simple message. “Keep learning. Be patient. Lead with integrity. You do not need to have it all figured out. But you do need to stay true to what you believe in. Let that guide you.”
Ahlam AlBannai’s story is one of clarity, purpose, and quiet strength. It reflects the spirit of Emirati women who lead with heart and contribute with intention.
