“Balancing work alongside my studies at UOWD taught me discipline, time management, and the value of applying theory in real time.” – Ahsam Ahmad
Ahsam Ahmad is an alumnus of the University of Wollongong in Dubai and a Bachelor of Commerce graduate. He is currently Senior D2C Strategist & Data Analyst at Cheil MEA, working at the intersection of marketing, data and strategy.
For UOWD alumnus Ahsam Ahmad, marketing has never been a choice between creativity and numbers. It is where the two come together.
Since beginning his career while still in his second year at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Ahsam has built a professional path spanning strategy, data and marketing for regional and global brands. Today, as Senior D2C Strategist & Data Analyst at Cheil MEA, he combines insight and creativity to help shape work that is not only engaging, but accountable to measurable impact.
“I chose this career because I’ve always been drawn to storytelling,” he says. “Not just telling stories, but shaping ones that move people and create change. Marketing became my medium, allowing me to turn insights into narratives that connect brands with real human emotions, moments and meaning.”
That combination of creativity and analytical thinking remains one of the things he values most about his profession.
For Ahsam, good marketing begins with an idea, but it also carries a responsibility to understand what that idea achieves. It is this balance that continues to motivate him: the opportunity to influence how people think, feel and act while ensuring creativity is grounded in insight, intention and measurable value.
His career has steadily grown alongside that philosophy, bringing opportunities to work across major brands while taking on increasing leadership responsibilities.
Along the way, several milestones have stood out.
In 2025, Ahsam was recognised by Campaign Middle East as one of its Digital Faces to Watch, an acknowledgement of emerging talent shaping the region’s marketing and communications industry.
Another particularly meaningful moment came through his contribution to Expo 2020 Dubai, for which he received an honorary certificate from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
For Ahsam, both moments represented more than professional recognition. They reinforced his belief in pursuing work with a clear sense of purpose and impact.
His professional journey began before he had even completed university.
Balancing work alongside his Bachelor of Commerce at UOWD meant learning early how to manage competing priorities, move between theory and practice and take responsibility for his own development.
That experience became an important part of his education.
“Balancing work alongside my studies at UOWD taught me discipline, time management, and the value of applying theory in real time,” Ahsam says. “That experience grounded my education in reality, helping me graduate not just with a degree, but with clarity, resilience, and a strong sense of professional purpose.”
Starting his career while studying also meant that concepts discussed in the classroom could immediately be viewed through the lens of professional experience. As his career developed, that ability to connect ideas with real-world outcomes became increasingly important, particularly as his work moved further into the intersection of strategy and data.
But professional progress has not always followed a straight line.
In 2021, amid the uncertainty that followed the COVID-19 pandemic and growing pressure at work, Ahsam reached a point where he knew he needed to step away. After being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, he made the difficult decision to take a year away from his career.
Rather than viewing that period solely as an interruption, he came to see it as a turning point.
“What helped me persevere was choosing self-awareness over self-judgment,” he reflects. “That pause allowed me to heal, reset, and return stronger, with a deeper sense of clarity and purpose than before.”
The experience changed how he approached both his professional life and his own expectations of success. It also reinforced the value of knowing when to reassess, allowing progress to include periods of reflection as well as forward movement.
Behind much of Ahsam’s drive is a mindset he credits to his father.
“My driving force is a deep belief in possibility, shaped by my father’s unwavering ‘can-do’ attitude,” he says. “Watching him approach every challenge with determination taught me that no task is too small and no goal too ambitious.”
It is a perspective that has continued to shape the way Ahsam responds to challenges, encouraging him to treat obstacles as opportunities to learn rather than reasons to stop.
His memories of UOWD, however, extend well beyond the classroom and the beginnings of his career.
What he remembers most are the people.
“The friendships I formed made the journey meaningful beyond lectures, late-night assignments, lunch in the food court and deadlines,” he says.
Those relationships gave him support, perspective and memories that continued long after graduation, reinforcing his belief that university is shaped as much by the people encountered along the way as it is by formal education.
Today, Ahsam is looking beyond individual campaigns and towards the broader influence that marketing, strategy and leadership can have.
“I see my career evolving toward building ideas and systems that shape culture, not just campaigns,” he says, “where insight, creativity, and leadership come together to create long-term impact.”
Part of that ambition is to mentor the next generation of professionals and contribute to a marketing industry in which brands think carefully about how they show up in people’s lives. Ultimately, he hopes to create work whose relevance extends beyond individual projects, campaigns or job titles.
His belief in mentorship also shapes the advice he gives young professionals preparing to enter the workplace.
For Ahsam, starting a career requires not only confidence in what a new generation can bring, but also a willingness to understand the people already around them. Different generations have entered the workplace under different expectations and cultures, and learning to navigate those perspectives can be an important professional skill.
“Be patient with yourself, but also be patient with the people managing you,” he advises.
Rather than treating generational differences as barriers, he encourages graduates to approach them with curiosity. Learn how colleagues and managers think, he says, build trust through consistency and allow the impact of your work to demonstrate new ways of doing things.
“When curiosity meets humility, growth becomes a shared effort, not a battle.”
Away from work, Ahsam makes time for the activities and relationships that help him switch off. That can mean building LEGO, working out, spending time with friends or horse riding in the desert. He is also a Formula 1 fan.
It is a balance that reflects one of the broader lessons his journey has taught him: a successful career is not simply about moving continuously forward.
From beginning his professional life while still at UOWD, to earning recognition within the region’s marketing industry, contributing to one of Dubai’s most significant global events and making the difficult decision to step away when he needed to, Ahsam’s career has been shaped by an evolving understanding of what meaningful progress looks like.
As he looks towards the next stage, his focus is increasingly on what remains after the campaign has ended: the ideas that influence culture, the people he can help develop and the work capable of creating lasting value.
