- Dr Milan Dordevic
Dr Milan Dordevic is an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), where he teaches CSCI218 Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and supervises Master’s and Bachelor’s students on various AI-related topics. Dr Dordevic holds a Doctor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Primorska – FAMNIT, Slovenia (EU), awarded in 2012. His dissertation was titled “Grafted Genetic Algorithms and the Traveling Visitor Problem”.
Dr Dordevic adopts a practical, student-centered, and interdisciplinary approach to teaching, emphasizing: Hands-on Learning: Courses like CSCI218 Foundations of AI, Web Technologies, and Fundamentals of Programming include progressive assignments and real-world applications to reinforce concepts through practice. Project-Based Learning: He supervises Capstone Projects and senior research initiatives that encourage students to apply theoretical knowledge to solve real-world problems, often in collaboration with industry partners (e.g., AHB.ai). Algorithmic Thinking and Problem Solving: His teaching in courses such as Discrete Mathematics, Systems Programming, and Computational Thinking and Coding focuses on developing students’ logical reasoning and algorithmic design skills. Use of Emerging Technologies: He integrates AI, VR, and web development frameworks into coursework and student projects, fostering innovation and technical fluency. Mentorship and Supervision: Dr Dordevic actively supervises both Bachelor’s and Master’s students, guiding them through advanced AI topics and encouraging research publication and conference participation.
Dr Milan Dordevic’s research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence, evolutionary computation, and combinatorial optimization, with a strong focus on developing intelligent systems for real-world applications. His doctoral work introduced the Grafted Genetic Algorithm to solve the Traveling Visitor Problem, and he has since expanded his research to include hybrid metaheuristic algorithms, deep learning, and AI-based diagnostic tools. He is actively involved in projects related to document-level event extraction for child safety, medical image analysis for diabetic retinopathy, and misinformation detection on social media. His work also explores machine learning applications in education, such as predicting student dropout rates and recommending academic majors using large language models. Dr Dordevic’s research is deeply interdisciplinary, combining technical rigor with societal impact, and is often conducted in collaboration with industry partners and presented at international conferences.
Before joining the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Dr Milan Dordevic held several academic and research positions across the UAE, Kuwait, Slovenia, and Serbia. From Fall 2021 to Summer 2025, he was at the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in the UAE, where he taught a wide range of computing and IT courses, coordinated student competitions, and contributed to technical committees for conferences and cybersecurity events. Prior to that, he was an Associate Professor at the American University of the Middle East (AUM) in Kuwait from Fall 2018 to Fall 2021, and an Assistant Professor there from Spring 2014 to Fall 2018, teaching engineering-focused programming and mathematics courses, supervising senior projects, and leading academic activities and ABET curriculum development. Earlier in his career, Dr Dordevic worked at the University of Primorska in Slovenia, contributing to applied research projects in healthcare and LIDAR data processing as well as focusing on evolutionary algorithms, combinatorial optimization, and AI techniques such as Ant Colony and Memetic Algorithms.
