Dr Obada Al-Khatib is an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD). His research interests span wireless communications, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, with applications in smart cities and intelligent infrastructure. He holds a PhD in Electrical and Information Engineering from the University of Sydney, Australia, where his research focused on modelling and performance analysis of wireless communication systems for smart grid applications.

Dr Al-Khatib’s teaching spans engineering and digital transformation, including IoT and cloud computing. He adopts a student-centred approach that combines technical foundations with practical applications through hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and discussion. His teaching philosophy emphasises intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, independent learning, and professional responsibility. Through teaching and mentorship, he aims to build students’ confidence and equip them to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.

Before joining UOWD in 2016, Dr Al-Khatib was a Research Associate at the University of Sydney, where he also worked as a tutor and laboratory demonstrator in Radio Frequency Engineering and Wireless Engineering. His earlier industry experience includes working as an Electrical Engineer with Consolidated Contractors International Company in Qatar.

Dr Al-Khatib’s research focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and intelligent systems for smart cities, autonomous systems, and critical infrastructure. His work spans wireless communications, energy-efficient devices and systems, vehicular networking, machine learning for network optimisation and cybersecurity, and AI-based monitoring and fault detection in connected and cyber-physical systems.

Multiple UOWD Internal Grants: 2018 – 2025
Four grants across topics including machine learning and deep learning for intrusion detection in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), early detection of Parkinson’s disease, and Ecopia Farm.

Dr Al Khatib is a member of Institute of Electrical and Information Engineering (IEEE), member of IEEE power and Energy Society (PES), member of IEEE communication Society (ComSoc), and member of Engineers Australia.
