Dr Hala Georges is an Assistant Professor in Visual Communication, teaching across the Bachelor of Communication and Media and the Master of Media Design programs.
Dr Georges is a designer, researcher, and educator whose work explores the intersection of typography, cultural identity, and visual communication. Her teaching is grounded in research-led design practice, integrating critical theory with creative experimentation. She has developed a Research & Development (R&D) model for design pedagogy, encouraging students to frame their design projects through critical research questions that connect visual practice to contemporary global issues and real-world challenges.
Alongside her teaching, Dr Georges maintains an active creative research practice investigating multilingual typography and the contemporary reinterpretation of ancient Semitic scripts, including Syriac and Aramaic. Her work examines how historical letterforms can be reimagined within contemporary visual communication to foster dialogue across cultures and languages. Her projects have been exhibited internationally in countries including the UK, USA, Spain, Germany, Italy, Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Canada, and the UAE.
Dr Georges serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Literature & Arts, the Design and Art Studies International Journal, and the Design Principles and Practice Research Network. She is also a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Prior to joining UOWD, she held academic positions at the University of Northampton, and the University for the Creative Arts (UK) and at the University of Sharjah (UAE). She also taught at SintLucas and CiBAP Colleges in the Netherlands and served as an External Examiner at the University of East Anglia (UK).
Through her teaching and research, Dr Georges positions design as a critical cultural practice capable of shaping dialogue, identity, and social reflection.
