Case Writing and Teaching Workshop at UOWD
Wednesday, 20 January, 2010
Case-based teaching and learning from a regional perspective is growing in importance in UAE to foster intellectual growth of business students and executives from the region. As a first step, the Centre for Academic Staff Professional Development (CASPD) and Business Case Centre at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, in association with Canadas Richard Ivey School of Business, organized a Case Writing and Teaching Workshop from January 10 to 14, 2010. The workshop was conducted by Professor James A. Erskine, an internationally renowned expert and trainer for Case writing and Teaching from the Richard Ivey Business School. The aim of the workshop was to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills to write cases and to teach with cases. In addition, this workshop was also aimed at establishing a core data-base of cases within the regional framework at UOWD enhancing knowledge creation and knowledge sharing locally and globally. Out of the 19 participants who enrolled for the workshop, 16 participated in the Case Writing Workshop and three academics joined the Case Teaching Workshop. The Case Writing Workshop resulted in 15 complete, technically sound cases. These decision-based cases were written by participants through collaboration with leads from locally based companies. The cases were written by each participant, under the supervision of Professor James Erskine on topics ranging from Accounting, Corporate Finance and Human Resource Management to Banking, Corporate Governance, Quality Systems, Strategy, Leadership and Marketing. The case leads from organizations based in UAE, included Economic Zones World (EZW), JAFZA, Jumeirah Group, The Media House, Production Services Network (Dubai), National Bank of Dubai, Excel Sports, Selective Marine Services, AquaChemie, Promo Seven Sports Marketing and DAMCO, Dubai. As a grand finale, a dinner reception and graduation ceremony was held on the 14 of January to honour the trainer, participants, leads and organisers. Special prizes were also awarded to the two best cases written during the workshop.
