Thursday, 04 February, 2016
The University of Wallongong Dubai (UOWD) recently joined forces with The Dubai Business Women Council (DBWC), the official representative organization for business women, both professionals and entrepreneurs, in the Emirate of Dubai, to host the fourth event in the Women and Leadership seminar series. The panel discussion on women’s roles in international companies was lead by Dr Payyazhi Jayashree, Principal Investigator behind the study (and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business). Joining the discussion was Nehad Tadros, Global Head of Coaching and Leadership Development, Aramex and Simran Kaur, Head of Marketing: Gulf, North Middle East and Turkey, Philips Healthcare. The areas explored by the delegates included conflict resolution, the need for legislative and business continuity plans in the workplace to support women and the involvement of men in the discussion surrounding women and leadership. “Knowledge is power” remarked Nehad Tadros during the debate. “The opportunity that women have in organisations to gain this knowledge is sometimes limited and you need to be at the table to make yourself heard.” The collaboration between DBWC and UOWD was launched in 2015, through a grant from the National Research Foundation as part of the University-Industry Research Collaboration Award – a Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research initiative that helps to promote university-industry research collaboration projects which establish the agenda for longer-term partnerships in the UAE. “Our objective with this campaign is aimed at encouraging women in the UAE to discuss and explore the factors associated with females attaining, and succeeding in, leadership positions in the UAE,” said HE Dr. Raja Easa Saleh Al Gurg, President of DBWC. “Through partnerships like these we are enabled to generate case studies and valuable insights into real matters influencing women in the workplace today which will later become valuable literature for further studies.” The next session in the collaboration will mark International Women’s Day and will take place at DBWC on 7 March 2016.
