UOWD Welcomes Cambridge High School Students for Hands-On Internship Experience

Wednesday, 12 August, 2026

We recently welcomed students from The Cambridge High School, Abu Dhabi, for a five-day internship program designed to give them early exposure to university life, professional environments and future career pathways.

The internship was awarded as part of our School Counsellors Initiative, which invited career counsellors from schools across the UAE to share inspiring student success stories from their institutions. Following a review of the submissions, the story shared by Dr Frithi Antony, Career Guidance Counsellor at The Cambridge High School, Abu Dhabi, was selected as the most inspiring.

In recognition of this achievement, UOWD awarded the school a five-day internship program for eight students, giving them the opportunity to learn directly from teams across the Faculty of Business, IT Department, Marketing and Student Life.

Exploring the University Workplace

Across the five days, students moved through different areas of the University, learning how each department contributes to the wider student and campus experience.

With the IT and AV team, students explored how technology supports teaching, communication, events and daily operations in a modern university environment. They took part in activities covering computer hardware, networking basics, cybersecurity awareness, AV systems, troubleshooting and workplace technology support.

In the Marketing Department, the internship was built around a live Summer Camp marketing project. Students were introduced to campaign planning, branding, social media, website journeys, content creation, photography, videography and employability. They then worked together to develop campaign ideas, create content and present their final work to the Marketing team for feedback.

Through the Faculty of Business, students joined sessions on the transition from high school to university, international business, CV writing, interviews, accounting and finance, academic writing, entrepreneurship and capital budgeting. They also took part in an industry visit to Fairmont, where they gained insight into hospitality operations and professional career pathways.

The Student Life team introduced students to the work behind campus engagement, including clubs and societies, sports and recreation, esports, major university events and the full event planning process. Students also completed a practical event planning exercise, helping them understand how ideas are developed, organised and delivered in a real university setting.

Building Confidence Through Experience

Throughout the program, students were encouraged to take part actively, work in teams and reflect on what they were learning. The experience allowed them to see how different interests, from business and technology to marketing and events, could connect to future academic and career choices.

For Marketing intern Saba Thajuddeen, presenting her final project was a key highlight.

“It was a great experience and helped me understand how to confidently present and explain my ideas,” she said.

John Karem, who completed his internship with the IT team, said the hands-on experience helped him better understand his interest in technology.

“I really loved the hands-on working and visiting the different places of the university and seeing how the different parts work,” he said. “I realised I’m really good with technical stuff like AV and networking, so I might look into that in the future.”

As the students completed their week at UOWD, the program marked an important early step in their career exploration, one shaped by curiosity, practical learning and meaningful engagement with our University community.
