UOWD Engineering Innovation Fair 2026 Showcases Future-Focused Engineering in Action

Thursday, 06 August, 2026

The 20th UOWD Engineering Innovation Fair 2026 marked a major milestone for the University of Wollongong in Dubai, celebrating two decades of student innovation with its largest event to date. Bringing together more than 285 participants, 75 judges, and representatives from academia, industry, and government, the two-day event showcased outstanding engineering projects, pioneering research, and innovative solutions to real-world challenges from students across the UAE.

What stood out was not only the scale of the Fair, but the range of problems students chose to address. Their projects explored challenges connected to sustainability, automation, healthcare, smart cities, environmental monitoring, renewable energy and digital transformation, reflecting many of the priorities shaping the future of the UAE and the wider region.

A Two-Day Showcase of Engineering and Research

The Engineering Innovation Fair 2026 marked its 20th anniversary with a two-day showcase highlighting the depth and diversity of engineering research, innovation and applied problem-solving. The Fair featured two complementary events: Research Day, which highlighted undergraduate and postgraduate research, academic projects and thesis-based investigations exploring emerging technologies and engineering challenges; and Engineering Day, which showcased practical, hands-on projects where students transformed engineering concepts into functional solutions addressing real-world needs.

Across both days, the Fair brought together work from a wide range of engineering and technology disciplines, including robotics and autonomous systems, renewable and sustainable energy, Internet of Things and smart systems, biomedical and healthcare technologies, civil and environmental engineering, smart manufacturing, embedded systems, telecommunications, computer vision and intelligent transportation systems.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning featured across several projects, not as standalone technologies, but as enablers for practical solutions—supporting improved decision-making, enhanced automation, intelligent systems and innovative approaches to industry, environmental and societal challenges. Together, the two-day showcase reflected the full engineering innovation pipeline: from research and discovery to design, development and implementation.

The Fair demonstrated how engineering knowledge is transformed into meaningful solutions, connecting academic exploration with practical impact and preparing the next generation of engineers to address complex challenges.

Industry and Academic Engagement

A defining strength of the Engineering Innovation Fair was the level of industry and academic engagement behind it.

78 judges from academia, industry and government took part across the two days, with representatives from organisations including DEWA, e&, Deloitte, Technology Innovation Institute, SEE Holding, Buro Happold, Micropolis Robotics, Green Cement Factory and Emirates Water and Electricity Company, alongside universities from across the UAE.

Projects were assessed through a structured rubric covering innovation, technical quality, scientific contribution, societal impact, presentation, visual communication and overall implementation.

Several projects were also developed in collaboration with external partners, including thesis projects supervised by Dr Abdul Haleem and Dr Nassereddine in collaboration with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. These collaborations gave students the opportunity to work on applied engineering challenges shaped by real industry needs.

Feedback from Judges and Industry

Judges praised the quality of student work, particularly the strength of the technical thinking, the creativity of the solutions and the emphasis on practical implementation.

Reflecting on the Fair, Kiyan Afsari, Chairman of the Engineering Innovation Fair 2026, said:
“The Innovation Fair continues to demonstrate the exceptional talent, creativity, and dedication of our students. It is inspiring to see students applying engineering knowledge to solve real-world challenges and contribute to society. This year's Innovation Fair showcased not only technical excellence but also the strong culture of innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration that exists within the UAE.”

Amer Ghazal, Engineer and Team Leader for Autonomy Software at Micropolis Robotics, also highlighted the energy of the event and the depth of student work.

“This event is truly amazing. I have seen many interesting projects so far. One project that particularly stood out to me focused on providing food for stray cats; I really appreciated both its purpose and design. I was also impressed by how well the students addressed the technical aspects of their projects. Overall, the event has been very well organized, and there is a great energy here.”

The UOWD Engineering Innovation Fair 2026 highlighted the value of applied learning in engineering education, giving students the space to turn technical knowledge into practical solutions and to see their ideas evaluated by the industries and communities they may one day serve.
