Tuesday, 16 April, 2019
Dr Zeenath Reza Khan, Assistant Professor and Head of Integrity in Academia and Beyond Research Group in the Faculty of Engineering & Information Sciences at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), has been recognised with two separate accolades for her work as a leading female educator in the field of science and technology. In the fourth edition of the Leadership Excellence for Women Awards and Symposium (LEWAS), which was held late last year under the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil, Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr Khan was the only South Asian nominated and shortlisted in the ‘Academic of Distinction’ category. Out of about 250 applicants in the MENA region, she went on to be named First Runners Up for her efforts in teaching and learning, and in encouraging and supporting women and girls in STEM/STEAM. The award was presented by H.E. Shaikh Khalifa at a ceremony in Bahrain. In February this year, Dr Khan, was recognised as ‘Woman of Knowledge’ at the 52 Bangla TV Anniversary Gala Dinner, held at the Hessa Ballroom, Radisson Blu Hotel, Sharjah, in honour of her dedication and commitment to teaching and community work. 52 Bangla TV is a UK-based platform that encourages enlightening community dialogue for the betterment of society across 15 countries. The latest award was presented by Dr Mohammad Ali Reza Khan, national-award winning conservationist and specialist at Dubai Safari, Mr Mohammad Nowsher Ali, Senior Manager, Engineering at International Airlines, Mr Saifur Rahman, CEO and Founder at Pan Asia Events, and dignitaries from Consulate General of Bangladesh in Dubai. Speaking about the accolades, Dr Reza Khan said, “teaching is very rewarding because we get to see our students grow into independent learners and spread their wings beyond our classrooms to become valuable members of the greater community. For a teacher, that is a very big reward. I feel especially blessed to have been recognised twice in the span of less than six months in areas that are very close to my heart and I feel very passionate about – women in sciences and women as educators and thank the organizing teams, selection panels and judges for bestowing me with the honours.“
