2nd Adam Gilchrist Award presented to Dan D’Souza, Bachelor of Commerce Student

Legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist presented the 2nd Adam Gilchrist Sports Award to Dan D’Souza, a Bachelor of Commerce student, at a special ceremony held at the university campus on October 27.The event was attended by the Hon. John George Ajaka, member of New South Wales Legislative Assembly and Minister of Ageing and Disability Services and Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, Vice-Chancellor of University of Wollongong, Australia.Gilchrist, the dynamic wicket-keeper/batsman who captained Australia’s successful Test team during his long and glittering international career, is a Brand Ambassador for the University of Wollongong, Australia.Gilchrist congratulated Dan D’Souza, a Bachelor of Commerce student, who, he said, was fortunate to have the opportunity to ‘combine sport and study at such a fine university’.Dan is a fitting recipient of the award, sharing a number of sporting credentials with the famous cricketer. Like Gilchrist, Dan is a top-order batsman, whose outstanding performance at school level earned him a place in the UAE under 16 and under 17 national team squads.“I think this is a good initiative by the university and the cricket board to bridge that gap,” said D’Souza, 20, who attended British School Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi.The sports award marks an extension to UOWD’s range of grants that reward academic excellence. The award, open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, provides the recipient with a 50 per cent waiver on UOWD tuition fees throughout their chosen degree.Dan aims to continue his studies at the UOWD, while at the same time make use of Australia campus of UOW to hone his cricketing skills and emerge as a quality player from the UAE. As a product of UAE’s under-19 World Cup team Dan is a one of the leading young cricketers in the UAE.
