Media students and faculty discover latest newspaper trends at WAN-IFRA conference

Master of Media and Communications students had the opportunity to discover the latest regional and international trends and best-practice ideas in news publishing recently when they attended the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) 11th Middle East Conference in Dubai. Inaugurated by HH Shaikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman, Sharjah Media Centre, students had a chance to hear from a range of leading media personalities including Jane Davenport, the Managing Editor of Toronto Star, Canada, Dr Andrew Perkins from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Magnus Alselind, Managing Editor of Sweden’s Expressen newspaper and Peter Lamb, the President of Lamb Consulting ,USA. Among the key speakers was Mr Michael Golden, Vice Chairman of The New York Times who highlighted eight principles he and his team adopted to transform the newspaper on both the print and digital levels and respond to the challenges of the massive disruptions in the media industry caused by the internet and new technologies. UOWD’s Dr Swapna Koshy, who helped facilitate the participation of various universities at the event, commented that: “the conference was a great venue to learn from the masters and interact with academics and practitioners. Students found the networking opportunities exceptionally beneficial.”
