UOWD and Middlesex share the limelight during recent sports tournament

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) and Middlesex University scooped up a number of top spots during UOWD’s 12th Inter-University Sports Tournament. Held on the premises of Amity School in Al Qusais, more than 550 students representing several universities and colleges from across Dubai and surrounding areas participated in the four-day long tournament and competed for the top spots in basketball, volleyball and football. In a thrilling match, UOWD’s women’s volleyball team was crowned champions after a nail-biting final against Middlesex University. UOWD’s boy’s basketball lost against Canadian University in the finals whilst the University’s girls basketball team lost out on the winning spot against American University in Dubai in their final match. Although the matches were very intense, the sportsmen and women as well as the spectators were in high spirits cheering their teams towards victory. “The teams competed in a very challenging yet fun environment. These sport tournaments are a great platform for young and upcoming stars to showcase their talents whilst at the same time having fun. Contributing to the success of the event was the noticeable high levels of energy and enthusiasm amongst the teams”, commented Ruchita Sharma, UOWD’s Sports Coordinator. The tournament concluded with an award ceremony and the winning teams were presented with trophies and medals by Mr Franky Barreto, Manager, Students Services at UOWD. Universities that participated in the annual tournament were University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD); Middlesex University; Rochester Institute of Technology; Amity University; Manipal University; MODUL; Canadian University in Dubai (CUD); Gulf Medical University; IMT; American University in Dubai (AUD); Heriot Watt University and Skyline University.
