The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) hosted a delegation of leading HR practitioners from across the UAE at an interactive workshop on the subject of ‘Influencing and Negotiating Skills for HR Managers’.Joined by staff and students of UOWD, the audience heard from Mr Peter Nelson, an eminent authority in the field. As a leading practitioner he has worked for a wide range of high profile clients, including Barclays, Grant Thornton, Citigroup, and the UK National Health Service. He is also a respected figure in the academic arena, having delivered programs in Influencing and Leadership at Henley Business School for ten years. The event was hosted by UOWD’s Faculty of Business in association with The Human Resources Forum (THRF) of the Emirates. Welcoming participants, Dean of the Faculty, Dr Valerie Lindsay said, “We very much value our association with THRF. These events provide an excellent opportunity for students and staff to interact with industry professionals and to learn from each other in a practical setting.”Starting out by defining the concept of negotiating as ‘the process by which people move towards an agreement’, Peter went on to examine the skills and strategies required for effective negotiation in the workplace. He then outlined the five step process to executing a successful negotiation and provided practical examples of how negotiation can be applied in the context of human resource management. The presentation from Peter Nelson was part of the events series organised by THRF. Founded in the UAE in 1970, THRF is a group of Human Resources professionals that meets to network, share good practice, and promote continuous professional development in the field of HR.
