Monday, 22 July, 2019

The Assembly, the region’s first Smart Lab-Maker Space and Community Learning Initiative based in Dubai, concluded its second Show & Tech, an exhibition featuring innovative DIY projects contributed by tech enthusiasts of all ages from around the country. The annual event, held at the In5 Tech space in Dubai Knowledge Park, saw 50 projects from across 20 Education Institutions and more than 200 visitors.

Show & Tech is the Assembly’s annual showcase event - a community tech exhibition and competition aimed at fostering innovation and ingenuity at a grassroots level.

Innovators from universities, schools and the DIY maker community are invited to display their working tech prototypes at the venue on the day with the best ones winning prizes. The specific tech areas of interest for the event are AI/Machine Learning, Robotics, IoT, Blockchain, Apps, Mobility, AR/VR, UAVs, Big Data and any other intelligent use of exponential technology.

Ayesha Riyaz, Farhana Islam and Jannatul Haq, students from the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), won a well-deserved second prize with their project called ‘Road Rash No-More’, an AR App that focusses on driver interaction.

The first prize was awarded to Our Own English High School, Sharjah with their project ALIVEAN, and the third prize was awarded to GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah for their project on mind-controlled toys for focus building.

In addition to the winning projects, UOWD’s team consisting of Hareem Fatima, Adam Khan Liwal, Ibrahim Arshad, Sahan Ratnayake and Mehvish Sharieff received a special mention for their project BlockSupplAI that focusses on creating a regulated network of trusted pharmaceutical supply chain stakeholders to eliminate the circulation of counterfeit, recalled and expired medicines

The projects were judged by Alberto Araque, VP Internet of Things & Digital Payments at Etisalat Digital; Ashish Panjabi, Chief Operating Officer for Jacky’s Business Solutions; Bruno Gisquet, Marketing Director at Volkswagen Middle East; Matthew Karau, Lecturer Of Engineering Design at New York University Abu Dhabi and Vijay Jaswal, Chief Technology Officer for Middle East & Turkey at Software AG.

Prashant K. Gulati (popularly known as PK), entrepreneur and Founder of The Assembly, said, “We are very happy to help foster and encourage the next generation of innovators and it was very rewarding to see twice the number of entries this year. We will continue to empower these entrepreneurs and creators through our workshops to enable more people realise their dreams.”
