The 9th Public Speaking Competition was held by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) on 18 and 19 November 2009 at the Knowledge Village Auditorium. The competition was divided in four categories with 48 participating universities from all over the Gulf region. The UOWD team won the first place in the category Reducing Water-Energy Footprint in the Region: Challenge or Opportunity? with American University Sharjah (AUS) and Mahatma Gandhi University in second and third places. Speaker Afshaan Mukhtar presented the UOWD team's research paper on the theme. The UOWD team also included Immanuel Moonesar, Maham Uzair, Sara Mukhtar, Vincy Varghese and faculty advisor and mentor, Dr. Swapna Koshy.
